Ingredients like parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) are both common chemical ingredients in conventional household soaps that may be harmful to us. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (commonly known as SLS) is an inexpensive detergent added to a very large number of cosmetics and personal hygiene products such as shampoos, toothpastes and soaps. Technically SLS is what’s known as a Surfactant (surface active agent) and an Emulsifier.
While SLS is known as a foaming agent. In soap SLS breaks up the natural oils found on our skin, making it easier to wash and clean. However, it’s also very harsh on skin, which is why it’s recommended to avoid using soap directly on our faces or other areas where our skin is known to be more tender. SLS can lead to irritation of the skin and eyes, organ toxicity, developmental/reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, ecotoxicology, and biochemical or cellular changes, and possible mutations and cancer.
Parabens: are preservatives added to many personal care products meant to prevent the growth of bacteria and prolong shelf life. One study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that exposure to parabens may lead to increased levels of estrogen in the human body and potentially increase the risk of cancer.
